Mavericks Making a Difference: Թϱ School of Health and Natural Sciences Donates 20,000 PPE Pieces to Bronx Hospital
The Թϱ College School of Health and Natural Sciences (SHNS) has donated approximately 20,000 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as other essential equipment, to Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York.
The donation was due in large part to Թϱ nursing program staff Christina Rossi, director of the nursing labs for the New Rochelle and Bronx Campuses, and Clinical Simulation Director Karen Koziol, with support from SHNS Dean Joan Toglia and Associate Dean Golisz. A program-wide effort, SHNS administrators, professors and students sourced supplies to donate from the school’s nursing, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant, clinical lab science and other degree programs.
Susie Moscou, Executive Director of Թϱ College’s nursing program, and Miriam Ford, Associate Dean for nursing at Թϱ’s Dobbs Ferry and Manhattan Campuses arranged to have masks, gloves, boxes of thermometer probes, Ambu bags and other essential PPE donated to Montefiore. While all equipment serves a vital purpose, the two Ambu bags will provide a particularly crucial temporary stopgap for patients unable to obtain access to a ventilator and are experiencing breathing difficulties, a symptom of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Also contributing to the effort, Թϱ College Executive Director for Campus Safety and Management Konrad Motyka transported PPE from across Թϱ Campuses to the College’s clinical partner hospital in the Bronx. The PPE will benefit nurses, physicians and patients, as well as the individuals who clean labs and other hospital facilities.
Montefiore Hospital is a valued clinical partner for Թϱ College. Faculty, adjunct professors, and alumni work for Montefiore, and Թϱ students are placed at Montefiore for their clinical rotations. “We are very proud to be working at Թϱ College, a place where the motto is, ‘consumed in service,’ and we are very proud to be able to donate these supplies to one of our sister institutions,” said Ford.
